A hula dancer wearing a lei of fragrant maile leaves performs at Kauai's annual Emalani Festival, honoring the journey of Queen Emalani through the Alakai Swamp in 1871.
Maile is native to the Hawaiian islands and sacred to Laka, the goddess of hula. It is one of the oldest types of lei, and symbolizes of our connection to our lineage, past and future.
